SHOOTING THE BLACK POWDER REVOLVER
c John L. Fuhring

A simple test you should perform for yourself.

Here's a little experiment I have tried several times to test my theories and you can do it too.  Load and fire a cylinder the conventional way with lots of Crisco on top of the bullets so that the cylinder is sticky with the stuff.  Load two or three chambers with powder, but be extra sloppy and get some grains on top of the cylinder.  Ram down the bullets without brushing anything off and then fire the pistol.  I can almost guarantee you that at least one or both remaining chambers will also go off.  Now load with a lot of care making sure no powder grains are visible and try it again.  I can almost guarantee you that you won't have a chain fire.
